When it comes to website building and designing, experience is the key. A site should be attractive, but yet simple and effective. After years of building websites, examening exsisting websites and knowing what aproches are possible for creating a website, I compiled this list of ideas to keep in mind when making websites.

The design of the website gives the viewer a first impression of the company's image. It should usually be attractive while remaining professional. The style of the site should usually capture the owner's/company's style by using the right colors, values, line thickness, size, etc. Images should be used wisely and spacial care should be taken for the page to load in a reasonable amount of time.

It's usually through the navigation system that the viewer visits the different parts of a website. When a website becomes big, it should be well structured and comprehensible. All the parts of the site should be easy to access. A viewer who gives up on finding something will most likely leave the website.

Content modifications: often the site content changes frequently and it's therefore good to have a system with which the owner can modify the content easily without touching the code. This can be done from a simple interface that only the website owner has access to.

Strangly enough, one of the biggest problems with website building is compatability with internet browsers. Many sites work well with one internet browser but not with another. That can sometimes mean reaching only half the potential audiance. I don't claim that anything can easily be made compatible with the most commonly used internet browsers, but knowing the differences, knowing what is possible, and getting it right is important.

The technical aspect of website building is quite complicated and takes years to get a good understanding. Databases and scripting languages give more possibilities and easier access to content. Choosing a good website hosting providor is important to get the best option for the website's needs, and to be sure the site will remain online and not stop working because of insufficiant bandwidth or a similar problem.
